Faking an "Enhancing" Filter

Finished project
If you've been around photography for long, you've probably seen images where an glass filter was used to enhance autumn color. This effect is fairly easy to fake in PSP.

Find an image you would like to enhance

Open an image to enhance and make any other needed corrections to it before starting. Avoid using Auto Saturation Enhancement as this will saturate all the colors in the image. If you've added layers, merge down before proceeding.

  Add an Adjustment Layer

In the Layer Control Palette, right click on the layer and choose New Adjustment Layer-> Hue/Saturation/Lightness. From the Edit drop down, choose Yellows.

  Setting the hue range

The dialog now has a new control. In the color wheel is a white circle with some lines. This is what you use to choose the range of colors to modify. We chose Yellows from the drop down and the control is spanning from yellow-green to orange. We want to refine this because all we want to enhance are the yellows, oranges and reds. Put your cursor on the circle and drag it clockwise so that it is not selecting any of the greens.

After enhancement Setting the hue range intensity

The range extends a little too far into magenta. Put your cursor over the end of the range and drag it clockwise until it stops in the reds. The two white bars next to the circle control where the adjustment builds to full effect. We want a full effect on all of the colors in this range. Drag the white bars to the ends of the hue range. Now set the Saturation to around 20 and hit the proof button. Hit Okay to apply the effect. Remember that because this is an adjustment contained in a separate layer, you can reduce the intensity of the effect by sliding the Opacity slider in the Layer Control palette down. You can also double click the Adjustment Layer to bring the controls back up and make further adjustments.
