Azerbaijan National Soccer Tournaments

After the collapse of the Soviet Union and subsequently of its football leagues, Azerbaijan began to hold its own competitions. Since 1992 AFFA (Azerbaijan Football Association) has been organizing National Championships and National Cup competitions.

Azerbaijan National Championships

In 1992 Neftchi from Baku became the first champion of independent Azerbaijan football tournaments. In 1995/96 this team again won the champion title and became the first club with two victories in National Championships. Later on in season of 1996/97 Neftchi became the best team again.

Kapaz from Ganja show the best result last time. In 1994/95 and two seasons in succession 1997/98 and 1998/99 Kapaz become the champion of Azerbaijan. After 1992 the following teams succeeded to become champions:

- Garabagh from Agdam in 1993

- Turan from Tovuz in 1993/94

Azerbaijan Cup

There have been four Azeri Cup tournaments since 1992. The first team won the cup was Garabag. Then only two teams win Azeri Cup. In 1993/94, 1996/97 and in 1997/98 Kapaz and in 1994/95, 1995/96 and in 1998/99 Neftchi were the best on the long way to the victory Cup.

I also would like to mention teams, which played in final games, but lost. These teams are IInshaatchi from Sabirabad, Khazar from Lankoran, Khazri from Buzovna, Shamkir from Shamkir and Kur- Nur from Mingachevir.
