An explanation of the terms "yaoi", "yuri" and "josei ni":
"Yaoi" is a term in anime for stories about gay relationships. It is actually
an acronym which means:
Yama-nashi, ochi-nashi, imi-nashi : Without climax, without resolution, without meaning
It refers to the fact that most (if not all) of the yaoi plots have no meaning, as do
the relationships; yaoi stories are also referred to as PWP: "Plot? What plot?" Thanks
much to all those who corrected me on this. (Some wag also worked "yaoi" to mean
"Yamete oshiri ittai!" - "Stop, my ass hurts!", though I wouldn't know anything
about that. ^_^)
"Yuri" is simply a parody/corruption of the term yaoi to refer to lesbian
relationships. Reportedly, this came about because some (many?) characters in yuri
stories are named Yuri.
Thinking about it, I began scouring my J/E dictionaries
to create my own acronym, and I found "josei ni" (which translates as "towards the
feminine", or "towards femininity") to be a much better fit:
Jooken-nashi, seigen-nashi, nikumi-nashi : Without conditions, without limits, without hate
It sounded too good not to use it. ^_^
