Elizabeth's Bedroom

The Bedroom of Elizabeth Alexejevna, a 1900-century painting

Charles Cameron designed this State Bedroom for Catherine in Pompeiian style. Slim columns of glass and faience with gilt bronze mounts support a pediment which arches over the spot for the Imperial bed. The original bed is missing.

The furniture is the work of French furniture maker, Georges Jacob, which was ordered by Catherine in the 1780's. These pieces originally stood in the Arabesque Hall and later were moved from the Catherine Palace by Empress Aleksandra Fyodorovna to the Portrait Hall of the nearby Alexander Palace. This was a favorite room of the wife of Alexander I, Elizabeth, and it commonly bears her name.
