The Arabesque Hall
Most of the great halls of the Catherine Palace were ruined
during the Second World War and many are still awaiting restoration.
The costs of the restoration and day-to-day of the palace are
astronomical. It is to the credit of the heroic current museum
Director, Ivan Sautov, that restoration work at the palace has
continued. Much remains to be done. This hall is one of the future
projects of the museum administration. It was designed by Cameron
during the 1780's and was used by Catherine for summer entertaining.
There are no chandeliers, a string of candles lines the top of
the cornice and along with standing bronze victories holding candelabras
provides the evening illumination. The furniture of this room
was much admired and was ordered by Catherine the Great from Georges
Jacob in France specifically for this room.
