What is a C64?

What is a C64? You don't know the answer? Then you have missed something in your life. The C64 from Commodore is the best 8-bit computer ever made.
You might think now: "An 8-bit computer, what's so special about it? I already have a 32-bit Pentium III."
But there is an undeniable reason, why the C64 is much better than a Pentium III: The best computer-games ever made can only be run on the C64.
You don't believe me? Then you should try for yourself. You can find a lot of so called disk-images of old C64-programs on the internet. ATTENTION! Read the legality note about using disk-images! "And what can I do with these disk-images, if they cannot be run on a PC and I don't have a C64?" - There's a simple solution to this question: You need an C64-Emulator, which enables you to use a virtual C64 on your PC. Check the links below to get an emulator. There are three emulators, that are very good - almost any game available works on these three - and there are a few, which cannot run all games but have other advantages instead.
After you have installed the emulator of your choice, and copied the disk-images onto your harddisk, you can use the emulator as a real C64 and load the programs from the disk-images as if they were real floppy-disks. It doesn't matter, if you don't know how to use a C64. Almost any of the existing emulators help you to start the software without knowing any C64-specific commands.

Emulators

There are 3 reasons, why VICE is the best of all C64-emulators (at the moment). First it is freeware, which means that you don't have to pay anything for it. Second there exist several versions for different operating systems (DOS, Win95/98, Linux, OS/2, BeOS, ...). And the third reason is, that it's 99% bug-free, so almost any game available works on VICE 1.5. Here is the official VICE-Webpage. The newest version is 1.5. You can start games on disk-images through an emulator menu, so you can use them without any problems even if you haven't used a C64 before. VICE emulates sound and graphics perfectly. VICE also emulates several other historical Commodore computers.

CCS64 is also a good emulator. Almost any game available seems to work on CCS64. It runs under DOS/Win95. You can start games through an emulator-menu, so even if you haven't used a C64 before, you can start the games without having to learn the commands of the C64 operating system. You can download a demo-version from the official CCS64-Page. There are only a few functions that don't work in the demo-version, and the registration fee for the full version is not very high. The newest official version is 1.09. But there also exists a 2.0(beta) version which is much more comfortable to use.

C64S is one of the oldest C64 emulators. Although you can find many people, who tell you, that some games, that work on CCS64 and VICE, don't do so on C64S, I think C64S is one of the best emulators available. Maybe those people, who have problems with C64s, never used the newest version of C64S, which is version 2.52. Here you can find the official C64S-Page. The only disadvantage of C64S is, that the demo-version has some serious restrictions, and the full version is a little bit more expensive than CCS64. As with CCS64 you can start games from an emulator-menu in C64S. C64S can be used with DOS and WIN95, but if you use it within WIN95, you mustn't have the EMM386.exe driver loaded.

Through the links at the bottom of this page you can find other webpages, from which you can download some other emulators.

Legality Standpoint

You are allowed to use a full commercial game (or other commercial software) on a C64-emulator, if you own the original program and you don't run the real and the emulated versions at the same time. It doesn't matter, that the original programs are no longer sold. The authors still have their copyrights, and you're committing a crime, if you own and use disk-images of commercial software without paying for it.
You are allowed to use all programs, that are public domain or freeware, of course. There are a few parties who have graciously allowed the free distribution of their former commercial C64 software (see the links below).

C64 Sound

When the C64 was born, there were no other computers with an equivalent soundchip! C64-music was great - and it is still great! At the following internet-adress you will find a program that is called SIDPLAY. This program can play original C64-tunes. SIDPLAY uses files, which normally end with *.sid or *.dat. You can find a lot of these files by following the links at the end of this page.
Some hobby-musicians have also recorded some of the old C64-sounds as high-quality midi- and mp3-files. You can find a lot of these C64-Midi-Files at C64Audio.com.

Top 10 Games on the C64

Read the legality node before downloading any of these games!

Pirates

Pirates is a mixture of an adventure and action game. Your primary mission in this game is to capture pirates, but you can also earn your money by trading with goods, finding secret treasures, raiding foreign cities and fullfilling secret missions for the king of your country. During the game you also have to find a wife and rescue several members of your long lost family. There also exists a version of this game for the PC. It's called PIRATES GOLD.
pirates.zip - works with C64S only!

Boulder Dash

Boulder Dash is not only a game, it's a drug. It's one of the most famous (and best) games ever written for the C64. Your mission sounds simple: collecting as much diamonds as you can. But be sure it isn't half that easy as it sounds.
boulderd.zip - works with C64S, CCS64 and VICE

Hypaball

Hypaball is a fictious sports game. It's a bit like basketball, but the basket is moving and the players have jetpacks on their backs! This game is really great fun if you play it against another human. But the computer is a very stupid opponent. (This doesn't mean you can beat him before you have played the game several hundred times. I think I played it several thousand times!)
hypaball.zip - works with C64S, CCS64 and VICE

Giana Sisters

The most famous jump&run for the C64. I don't think that there exists any jump&run for the PC, which is half that good.
giana.zip - works with C64S, CCS64 and VICE

International Karate+

Do you know any karate-game for the PC with 2 human players and one computer opponent - a very tough one - at the same time? - I don't.
karate+.zip - works with CCS64 and VICE

Defender of the Crown

Your mission is to defend the British Empire against the evil French.
Brilliant graphics.
There exists a PC-version of this game, too.
defcrown.zip - works with C64S, CCS64 and VICE

Monty on the run

A very tricky and very funny jump&run game.
montyotr.zip - works with CCS64 and VICE

Jet Set Willy

This ist one of the oldest jump&run games ever made.
But believe me, it's the hardest one, too! This game is a real challenge!
jetset.zip - works with CCS64, and VICE

Street Sports Basketball

It's probably the best sports simulation on the C64 ever made.
Brilliant graphics, brilliant gameplay.
ssbasket.zip - works with C64S, CCS64 and VICE

California Games

I'm sure you know Winter Games and Summer Games, but California Games is even better.
california.zip - works with C64S, CCS64 and VICE
