The following information comes from a post Richard Watson made to the

In Mechanical age, when the fortress is pointed north, you can see a skeleton
hanging from a pole when you look through the telescope in Sirrus room.
Who
is that skeleton? My first thought was that it is one of the crew of the
black ships but why should a wreckage of those ships lie so far out to
sea?
The skeleton (nicknamed "Bob") was a member of the crew of the Black
Ships. The exact reason for his being tied to the raft and left to
wander the seas has long been forgotten.
