The
tale so far...
How many of us have witnessed the cruelties of insane slaughter of wildlife
for the sake of some mindless beings who prefer ivory over plastic and
tiger bones/ rhino horns over paracetamol? I can safely say none. But,
that does not mean these activities do not exist. We live in our big cities
and cramp into our small apartments, and we take for granted the
luxury
of living. Sadly, the detached minds of ours do not spare much for the
wildlife. The occasional visit to the city zoo may seem to bring upon the
peace of mind and soul, but it is those in the wild that are being persecuted.
And those in captivity may soon be the last of their breed.
Many courageous men and women out there in places whom most of us will
never step foot into, are trying hard to help save the endangered.
Many
have lost their lives to poachers, and many poachers have lost theirs in
return. This makes us wonder what all the fray is about. Indeed, what is
so important as to warrant men and women to risk their very lives for?
The truth is, nothing really. If you seriously think about it, do these
poachers kill for survival? Do they need to kill the endangered for sustenance?
Or has the tiger or elephant threatened the village's population?
A straightforward answer would be 'No'. The tiger is slained for its skin,
its bones, and whatever some mindless people would use as 'medicinal products'.
The elephant did not go on a rampage and threaten the village. It died
because again, some mindless people wish to own a piece of ivory ornament
simply because it looks good. But, if you seriously ponder over it,
you would see that many of these poachers indeed have to do it for survival.
Life is not easy in these faraway lands, and what little money these native
poachers could earn from selling the souls of the endangered to the buyers,
are simply not reflected in the exorbitant prices consumers would pay.
And of course, this makes me wonder where the fault lies. Let us not blame
the native poachers who risk their lives to feed their families. Rather,
let us focus on the root of the problem. And I guess by now, it should
be quite obvious the root lies with us, the consumers.
And often, the issue lies not in the Western world, but in our Far East.
I
sometimes wonder whether the high regard and respect Chinese and the like
has, of the magnificent tiger, proves to be the species' downfall.
In
reality, consumption of any parts of the tiger will not enhance your health.
You will be much better off taking medicine or herbs. And having a piece
of tiger skin would not bring a sense of pride, since you are inadvertently
a murderer.
And furthermore, I condemn the ivory trade to a greater extent simply because
I think the reason for slaugthering the elephants for their tusks is so
ridiculous. Just what is so special about ivory? Does the mahjong game
sounds better when played with a set made from ivory? Does the ornament made
of ivory which you displayed at your home makes you look like some rich
tycoon? The truth is, ivory or no ivory, it does not really matter to you.
But, it matters to the endangered who pay with their lives for it.
So, please, everybody. Do not buy any products that originated from the
endangered. These animals have done nothing against you. Please let them
live. Ask yourself honestly and seriously, can you do without these products?
Are these products such miracles of cure?
Know that the endangered are dying. Know that they died with immense sufferings.
Know that you can make a difference. And please, know that if you do not
help them, it will soon be too late...
Educate those around you and change their mindset, please do your part
in saving the endangered.
