THE SURFARIS
The Surfaris of Glendora, CA, first release was the single containing the long versions of Wipe Out and Surfer Joe (1/63). The shortened versions (3/63) went to #2 in '63 and #16 in '66. Wipe Out , perhaps the most emulated song in rock history, features a classic up-and-down guitar riff and a classic solo drum roll break. Follow up singles included Point Panic (9/63) which reached #49 and Scatter Shield (11/63). The album "Hit City '64" contained Earthquake and Scratch. They were one of the most prolific surf bands of the era, releasing a dozen or so singles and half that many albums. Also, having better than average talent, drummer Ron Wilson was praised by famed session drummer Hal Blaine. He also took the occasional lead vocals. Reportedly their last recorded surf song during the '60 was Storm Surf not released till l'96.
