UPDATE! The Poster, Release Date, etc.!
(1/20/99)
Once again CA has posted some big info on the RE film, here's what their scooper told 'em (yeah ripped directly from the site..best way to put it!):
"Okay i'm a bit confused hear because your last entry reported that George Romero hasn't really finished the script yet, but over at 'Homepage of the Dead', a horror movie site reports that he did finish the script. They posted an article dating back to October 24, 1998 in an interview with TalkCity Romero mentioned that he finished the script, and kind of gave the story of the movie. He mentions that in the movie Chris is not a member of STARS, he's just a local guy. On the other hand Jill is working undercover for STARS in Raccoon City, and they fall in love except Chris doesn't know that Jill works for STARS. He said that Chris ends up following the STARS team in the mansion. On an October 21st posting the owner of the site managed to ask Romero, in a 50 minute Yahoo! Chat session, if he was finished with the script. Romero said he was done with the script and it took 6 weeks to write."
Along with that, there was a poster put up! If it is indeed legit, it's definitely just a teaser - here it is:
The poster advertises a Fall 1999 release date, much sooner than the dates i've heard so far, and i wonder if it will coincide with the 3rd title's release date still... considering the Dreamcast title is supposed to be taking place in between RE2 and RE3...
UPDATE! on Casting and Music score, etc.:
(1/11/99)
Well, first off, i hear the movie is still focused on a release date to coincide with the 3rd Resident Evil video game, which is said to be summer/early fall 2000... which sounds reasonable for the film to well, be completed! Tom Savini still has a possibility to be involved with the film, but right now it doesn't look like it, of course Romero brings him in late usually (according to CA's report), so it's not definite yet. Bruce Campbell posted this interesting comment on his website regarding his rumored involvement with the RE film:
"I AM NOT INVOLVED WITH THAT FILM IN ANY WAY. JASON PATRICK HAS THE LEAD (CHRIS) OPPOSITE SAMANTHA MATHIS."
So it would seem that the Jason Patric/Samantha Mathis casting is pretty definite, as most wouldn't expect Bruce to be posting a rumor, but it's still not definite from anything i've seen reported. I guess now we can all stop bugging Bruce about it, though. :0)
On something i haven't heard anything about yet, CA got word that Ennio Morricone would be doing the original score for the film. Not familiar with the name at all, but then again i usually don't pay much attention to a film's scoring credits... a vital part of any movie of course!
IMDB search results show Ennio Morricone as scoring the recent films Bulworth (1998), and U-Turn (1997), didn't see those films so i can't say anything for the guy's work! Oh well.
Electronic Gaming Monthly has a 3-page interview with George Romero according to Ain't It Cool News, check the most recent issue as i don't have a month/issue number for it yet. Romero still plans to do things "balls-out", so hopefully the MPAA (that's who does it right?) don't get too ratings happy and force it to be hacked up... Director's cuts and such are always fun, but it'd be nice to get the full effect in the theatres, no?
Hmm, think i covered all i've heard... i'll try to be a little quicker next time!
UPDATE! on Bruce Campbell's involvement:
I emailed Bruce a week or so back about his rumored involvement with the RE movie, and also to blab like a teeny-bopper about him :0).
This is what he replied with!

Art,
Nope - no dice...
Best,
Bruce www.bruce-campbell.com
So, looks like Bruce won't be fighting zombies for S.T.A.R.S. Well, hopefully Romero picks someone truly worthy to wield a shotgun against the undead!!
| rumors |
(the following i read at Dark Horizons. Thanks to Vincent Vega for informing me!)
Resident Evil: 'Harun' has heard that cult
director George A. Romero has in fact been brought onboard the project, though
only as PRODUCER - not director (who is believed to be George Sluizer). Anyway
here's what he had to say:
Filming started last week in Oregon and California, it took 6 months to build
a huge set, that's why all these delays are popping
up. Romero gave interview about this movie two weeks ago, he was disappointed
because he won't direct it. Movie star, Bruce
Payne (Passenger 57) also talked, he will play villain character named Wesker.
Other stars are not mentioned, but budget is 60
mil., that means there will be more famous people involved.
This isn't confirmed however, as George Romero was earlier said to have nothing at all to do with the movie. And 60 million seems rather high for a video-game adaptation, since most video game movies go the way of Mario Bros., except for the somewhat successful Mortal Kombat (which only got $45 million). The original budget report of $25 M seems a little more realistic, although this is one of the best selling game series ever for Capcom and the Playstation. Mr. Vega sent me this soon after his initial report:
MORE GOOD NEWS, ART!!!!!!!!!!! my mom heard me spazzing out and she asked me what was up and i told her and she said that on the news last week there was a blurb about a "UNNAMED BIG BUDGET MOVIE BEING SHOT IN SOUTHERN OREGON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" COULD IT BE TRUE!?!??!?! right now i'm trying to hunt down bruce payne and george romero and see if i can find if they're committed to anything THIS IS COOL
So, with the help of Mr. Vega (of course), 'Re2: an unofficial site' will try to keep up-to-date as possible on the movie. If it does come to Southern Oregon, Vincent might just be able to get down there and check things out, and possibly score some info/pics... but of course, that's "if"...
UPDATE! on the above information:
The "mystery movie" being shot in Southern Oregon isn't Resident Evil. What it is, I don't know. Also, some big info on George Romero's involvement with RE:
(the following I read at Dark Horizons. Thanks to Vincent Vega for informing me!!)
The one and only George Romero who brought us the smash hit "Night of the Living Dead" made some big announcements this week at the Las Vegas VSDA show. Thanks to 'Trav THX', 'Lebowski', 'Kevin' & 'jay-dconl', and for full coverage of the show - check out the DVD Review site. Anyway the two major points revealed were:
* After months of negotiation, Romero has put pen to paper last week and signed a deal to write and direct the film version of the hit game "Resident Evil". Till now "Spawn" writer Alan B. McElroy was working on the film script with Romero producing, but it sounds as though McElroy's script has been ditched. While Romero hasn't begun writing the film yet, he did mention that foreign investors seemed 'hot on making it' and now it's just a matter of patience as we wait for him to churn out a script. This certainly ensures a Late 1999 release at the earliest, with the film more likely to be out in Summer 2000.
* Once RE is complete, Romero plans to jump right into the next installment in his "Night of the Living Dead" series. Financing details are currently being worked out on the film, but no plot or casting information was given away.
THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED! A "news flash" at the House of Horrors stated that Romero had announced he was writing and directing Resident Evil and also in negotiations for Night of the Living Dead 4! Also the coverage at DVD Review talks of his involvement with RE as well. Here's the text:
After all this technical talk, we then had the chance to meet with George A. Romero. The horror meister who brought us horror cult classics like “Night Of The Living Dead”, “Dawn Of The Dead” and “Day Of The Dead”, among others. It was very exciting to hear him talking about his plans for the next installment of the “Dead” series. Yes folks, you read this right. George Romero is currently working out the financing details to finally realize the next part in his zombie installment. This is no rumor any more. He is now actively pursuing the project. “First I will do Resident Evil however”, he says and once again lightning struck. Only last week, he signed the contract to write and direct the infamous and highly anticipated “Resident Evil” movie after months of uncertainty and negotiations.
Interview with Romero!
UPDATE: 8/29/98
(Thanks to Vincent Vega for informing me, once again!)
-Originally posted at Dark Horizons-
Romero told us that Capcom is hoping to have the movie ready in time for the release of the third game in the series, which at this point has not been announced. As for the movie itself, Romero says that it will be a true horror film targeted at an older audience, those who are fans of the game. "I'm hoping that it can just be dark and chilling like the game--good zombies, good makeup, good effects. I've had the advantage, doing my zombie films, of not having to have them rated. I think for the U.S. release it's going to have to fall within an 'R' because it's going to be an expensive film and nobody's going to take the chance of letting it go unrated," he said. "Our plan is to shoot it balls out, so somewhere in the world there will be a harder version of the thing and maybe we can put it out on a Director's Cut or release it in certain countries where restrictions aren't as tight." The plot will be based on the events of the first Resident Evil game, including the STARS (Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, among others) and the mansion setting.
So it looks like the RE movie will definitely not disappoint!! Hopefully it is a pretty heavy R. I've heard recently that the third game is most likely to be released somewhere in late '99 / early 2000, so that's when we can probably expect the movie to hit theatres. That seems like a reasonable timeline to finish the film and the game.
(the following i read at Ain't It Cool News. Thanks to Vincent Vega for informing me of the article.)
| the script! |
**This script is no longer accurate. George Romero will now be writing and directing the Resident Evil film, and it's of course likely he will be writing an original script for it. The below script will remain, for your enjoyment, but remember it's no longer the script for the film!**
This is an summary of a version of the script, no longer the actual script. There's a lot of spoilers, so don't read any further if you don't want to spoil the film. This was originally printed in PSM Magazine, i'll try to look at that to see if there's any difference. I got this from Ain't It Cool News, though.
REMEMBER: DON'T READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU WANT TO AVOID POSSIBLE SPOILERS!
"The story is written by Alan McElroy, the same guy who wrote the Spawn
movie. While it's definitely not the greatest screenplay ever written, it does manage to capture the feel of the
game quite well, and may turn out to be a pretty good movie--especially for action and horror buffs. WARNING: If
you don't want us to spoil what happens, DO NOT read any further. But if you're big Resident Evil fans like us,
you just have to know what the movie's going to be like!
It all starts off with a disturbance in the Raccoon Forest, where strange animals are mutilating campers and park
rangers. A SWAT team is sent in and is quickly destroyed by the mysterious creatures in the forest. At this point,
the government gets involved. It recruits Wesker (who is in an asylum for some reason that is never explained)
to break into a lab in the forest, presumably, to rescue some scientists there. Wesker recruits his team members
based on their specialties: Barry Burton is the all-around military expert who has retired and now runs a restautant,
Chris Redfield is the expert at combat, Jill Valentine is a munitions expert, and Brad Vickers is the Medic. Unknown
to the rest of the team, however, is that Brad is actually and imposter named Mike--he is trying to find his girlfriend
Becky, who was on the original SWAT team sent into Raccoon Forest.
The team sets down in Raccoon forest and is almost immediately attacked by wild mutated dogs. They make a run for
the lab/mansion in the middle of the forest and just barely make it there alive. They all get inside of the mansion,
and that's where things really heat up. They confront more of the dogs, along with giant wasps, tarantulas, and
of course, zombies. It's all-out tension and action as the group keeps losing members to each new threat, amd ammo
runs lower and lower.
Eventually they find the scientist they are supposed to rescue, and it turns out that this whole situation was
an insidious trap. They were to be infected wiht the T-virus and then allowed to escape, to spread the virus to
the world. Jill and Chris (the only ones left) get ahold of the antidote and escape from the building just as it
is exploding, only to be pursued by the Tyrant (who actually turns
out to be a mutated Wesker). They finally fight off the Tyrant, take the antidote, and walk off into the sunset.
The film's current form is ultra violent. It will be interesting to see whether it's toned down for a PG-13 rating,
or if the director just goes all-out for an "R". It is also interesting to note that no mention is made
of either the S.T.A.R.S. team or Umbrella Corp. But overall, the screenplay is a good basis for a potentially great
movie, and we can't wait to see how it turns out."
