The Lost Noel Tape

Noel Gallagher, a genius now but back in the mid 1980's he wasn't as polished as he is now. Many people have claimed to own the "lost Noel tapes" but it has never appeared, until now.

The last time someone claimed to have a "lost Noel tape", he sold his story to "The Sun" claiming that he accidently deleted it, recording BLUR songs over it!

Now the "lost Noel tape" is being put on auction at Christies on April 30th and is expected to raise over £3,000.

The "invisble" owner said "He used to come to my flat with some mates, he was a very shy and sensitive person. He was really keen to tell me about these songs he had written but was too embarrassed to play them to me. Plus he also wrote a lot of poetry back then. He had no real education to speak of, and no experience, but he was still able to express himself with words, melodies and rythms."

A shy, unconfident Noel decided to record his masterpieces on to a cassette for his friend to listen to. He gave him the tape in 1988 along with hand written lyric sheets for two of the songs. "As far as I am aware, Noel only did the tape so he could show me the songs." His friend explains. "Even then he was embarrassed as hell when I played it in front of him. But I thought it was wonderful, as I told him at the time. I played it to death over the next few years."

After that Noel left Manchester to work for the Inspiral Carpets and the rest they say is history but before he went he told his friend "Nobody else has a copy of that tape, not even me. It's yours to do with what you like with". The owner now says that financial needs have forced his hand into selling the tape, but the first thing he did was to write to Noel asking his permission to sell it or to ask if he wanted it back, for nothing. He added "if you don't reply then I take it it is OK to sell the tape." Noel never replied.

Track Reviews

1. Womb To Tomb - An excellent tune that takes its influences from the Smiths and Teardop Explodes. Includes the lyrics, "what's the point?", "You have to sacrifice all pleasures to buy a home" and "whay do you run, why do you hide?"

2. Baj - Noel first mentioned in the Observer that this was the first ever song he wrote. It is thought that Noel actually means Badge, but as you know suffers from mild dyslexia. One line says "on your badge it says 'wear a badge'."

3. I Am The Man - Of the eight songs on the tape, this is the one which would transform most easily into an Oasis anthem. It includes fantastic lyics like "I am the man, 'cos I said so." and "C'mon tell me who are you?" Although Noels voice lacks power.

4. England - This is a true working class song in the style of Billy Brag. It includes some superb lines like "the rich stay at home.", "someone's been assaulted by an iron bar." and the fantastic "I hope there is an atomic war, and a great big bomb bounces through my door."

5. I Don't Think So! - There is one moment in this track that the vocally it is pure Oasis. It is basically a conversation between two friends. "Have you found a new boyfriend?", "No I don't want to bet" is the reply.

6. What's It Got To Do With You? - A jingle jangle guitar riff in a Byrds style runs through this track, which ends with the line "It's got nothing to do with you."

7. No Cause For Alarm! - This track takes it's riff from The Beatles' 'You Never Give Me Your Money'. Lyrically it's a touching message of faith and affirmation.

8. Have Fun!! - A definite Smiths influenced track - Superb lines like "Keep beleiving in yourself, only you can help yourself, you've gotta have fun."
