What is a Mutant?
A mutant is a person who is born with "special" powers. No one knows for
sure what causes mutation or who will be born a mutant until puberty, when
their powers is most likely to manifest due to a heavy stress.
NOTE: There has been a few exceptions when
it comes to manifesting mutation during puberty. For example, Nightcrawler
was born with blue fur and tail since birth.

So, why do people fear and hate them?
Because they are different. They believe that mutant will eventually replace
normal humans. They fear what they don't understand.
And who wouldn't? Imagine going to school with someone who can fire optic blast
at you, putting you in danger if they don't know how to control their powers.

Why doesn't Professor X make Magneto a good
guy by messing with his mind?
It goes against Professor Xavier's morals. He believes that everyone has free
will, and that they can change by reasoning. He would only go into someone's
mind if that person gives him permission, or in case of a very life and death
extreme situation.

Why does Cyclops have to wear those visors?
Scott Summers is unable to turn off his optic beams at will. He must always wear
special visors made of ruby quartz plates that filter his beams. These visors
plates can be set at different settings; from 90 degrees (blocking the optic
beam from exposing), to zero degrees (letting the beams go through completely).
He also uses ruby sunglasses when not in a mission or battle, although it
does not give him the same capability of control as the visors.
