Born and raised in the luscious litoraneous city of Rio de Janeiro, Beatriz Bonilla da Costa, "Bea" was a lackluster Brazilian model and artist, when after losing her job, she managed to get a new one in Brazilian Secret Service Agency, the SNI - Serviço Nacional de Informações (National Information Service - NIS). She surprisingy proved to be one of their best spies, mastering as no one else the use of a pyroplasmatic rays gun created by them which could turn organic stuff into energy. However, this powerful gun was stolen by the son of one of Bea's ex-bosses and she was assigned to regain it. During the mission, she used the pyroplasmatic gun and eventually exploded the whole place. No one was injured, but Bea, as a result of the energy liberated by the pyroplasmatic rays, got the ability to breathe green flame. She also became wanted by the SNI because of having disobbeyed their orders to keep the mission secret and discreet and bring back the gun, which was destroyed. So she decided to escape, dyed her hair green, and flew Paris to join the Dome and become a Global Guardian. There she met the heroine who would become her best friend, Ice Maiden II, Tora Olafsdotter, a princess of the mythic Ice People of Northern Norway who was found by a team of scientists and decided to leave her homeland to know the warm world. When the Global Guardians were disbanded in favor of the Justice League International, needing money, she decided to join the JLI and persuaded Ice Maiden II to go with her. She practically forced their acceptance by the JLI, but proved to be a valuable ally, alongside with Ice Maiden II, during the invasion of Lord Mangá Khan.
A while after joining the JLI, Green Flame would change her name to Fire, convincing Ice Maiden to be called just Ice.
During the Invasion, the gene-bomb deeply affected her. Her powers went out of control, she got in coma for a couple of days and stayed very sick for a while. Then she found out her powers were awfully expanded and improved, she became able to turn her whole
body into a green flame, fly and be virtually intagible in this state.
In the fight against Doomsday, she used her powers to their whole extension and her flame seemed to have burned away, until the attack of the Overmaster, who mentally controled and apparently killed Ice, facts that ligthed Fire again.
When the first Ice Maiden, the Norse scientist Sigrid Nansen, who volunteered in a test to artificially duplicate powers of the Ice People, joined the League, she somewhat came on Fire, taking advantage of her resamblance to Tora and their old times at the Global Guardians. Ice Maiden was probably the first bissexual member of the Justice League. However, Bea and Tora's relationship had always been just a strong friendship, a sisterhood, and Nansen soon dropped out this idea and got involved with Olivia Reynolds. Bea is reported to be dating Guy Gardner, a relationship that was born from the mutual mourning of Ice. Tora
She continued as a member of the League through its various crises since then until the current incarnation, in which she wasn't a part. In the 1st issue of the current JLA series, Ice Maiden mentions Fire as having lost her powers once more, which we expect doesn't last for too long.
IMPORTANT NEWS!!!!
Fire burns again! She will be guest starring in Martian Manhunter #10, next July, which also brings Cameron Chase. I will update the site as soon as I get my hands on this issue. Here's a spoiler of the comic, courtesy of Mania:
Martian Manhunter #10:
John Ostrander/Phil Winslade
Former JLA member Fire guest-stars in an issue guest-pencilled by Phil Winslade with inks by Mike Perkins. Cameron Chase is hot on J'onn J'onzz's trail. and it leads her to South America and the former Justice Leaguer known as Fire. But as we all know, "fire" has a bad effect on the Manhunter from Mars.
Preview the cover of Martian Manhunter #10 by clicking here (It seems Bea and J'onn J'onzz are getting pretty hot!)
