RED SONYA!

Edgar Robert E. Howard has always been one of my favorite authors (Most noted for Conan the Barbarian) Red Sonya was not only a pretty bad Arnold movie, but also popped up in the Conan Comics, and her own comic series. One of our Famous Covers Custom List members (John Zink)did a neat one, and I needed one for my own, (JUST like Space Ghost). I wanted to do her, and needed good reference material, other then just another person's custom. (BTW you can use his link up there to view his figures)

Luckily, I found Red Sonya #1 last week for $.99! There's conflicting images of her costume, so I went with the one pictured inside. I didn't want the cloth look for her chain mail. so I decided of course, to try it the hard way.. talk about a job and a half!

I took fine netting, which is like that net that comes with the sideshow creature figure, but is lighter, and used that as a base. It's stretchy, like lycra, but is thin, so sorta disappears. I then used regular saran wrap as a base for this so it wouldn't stick for the next step. I hot melt glued each sequin separately! And it takes as long as you might imagine! About 3 hours for a skimpy bra and chainmail panties! I found some craft rings perfect for her bottom sides, and sewed the rings to the front and back. To get a form fitting top, I used double sided web tape.

Her shoulder armor is silver painted craft foam, and the front bra buckle is supersculpey, with a sequin middle, and a "gem" insert. I stole the sword from the same poor warcraft guy the other customizer used, and found a scale knife lying around. Her boots are Dark Phoenix boots, trimmed, and taken in so they would fit better (they are slightly less then knee high) and painted brown. Her gloves are daredevil "claws", trimmed, taken in and painted, and her thigh bands are something no one's used yet.. it's called metal repair tape, from wal-mart. Basically, it's like thick aluminum foil, with a sticky back. Great stuff, and chrome shiny!

Now I gotta decide which Conan to do.. the first Barry Windsor Smith one, or the older more popular buscema one.. I'm pretty stoked about Sonya. as she came out quite nifty! Thanks for the idea to do her, John! BTW you can find all sorts of other custom Famous Cover figures, and even try your own hand with some of another web site's supplies. They do costume parts to order, and are very reasonable. They are called ATOMIC DOG, and you can click on the name for a link to them!
