The
Swamp Fox

Francis Marion was born in Berkley county in the low country of South Carolina during the year of 1732.
Marion was known for using natural shields for protection during battle. These shields consisted of hills, rivers, and swamps. This is one reason Marion became known as the Swamp Fox. The other reason came about after a comment was made from a British officer saying, "As for this damned old fox, the Devil himself could not catch him."
Marion's pre-war experiences consisted of fighting with the state militia against the Native Americans. He also served one term in the South Carolinian Provincial Congress.
When the Revolutionary war began he was first appoi0nted the job of lieutenant-colonel in the Continental Army. He as made a general after serving only a short period of time. Marion had many followers. Marion and his followers were known as Marion's Brigade. This Brigade became known for their guerilla tactics of surprise attack an movement.
After the war he was twice elected to the state legislature. He was also a delegate to the South Carolinian constitutional Congress in 1790.
Also, he settled down to a new cozy home and plantation at Pond Bluff in South Carolina. He shared this with his new wife, also, his cousin,, Mary Ester Videau. They were married on April 20, 1786. At this time Marion was 53. Marion died in 1795 at the age of 62. He was buried at Belle Isle near Pond Bluff.
Marion served his state well and deserves more credit than he is given.
