911 GT1 Clearing the road for pure-bred racing technology
In late July 1996, Porsche announced its intention to build a small series of exclusive Porsche 911 GT1 for use on public roads. At that time, the only engine available for that model was the induction engine used as a basis for the racing variant which, in 1996, won the 24 hours of LeMans, finished first in Brands Hatch, Spa and Zhuhai and will continue to compete in international GT endurance events in 1997.
We are pleased to inform you that this model can now be had with a more powerful turbocharged engine as announced in 1996.
Engine
The development staff of Porsche's motorsport department developed a 400 kW (544 HP)
3163 ccm horizontally-opposed 6-cylinder engine yielding its maximum power output at 7,000 rpm. The engine features water-cooled 4valve cylinder heads and cylinders as well as two exhaust gas turbochargers complete with intercooler.
The engine is controlled by an electronic M 5.2 engine management system which includes a hot-wire air mass sensor and has been laid out for sequential multipoint fuel injection using two lambda sensors. For exhaust gas purification, the car is fitted with 4 metal-bed catalytic converters. The maximum torque of 600 Nm is reached at 4,250 rpm.
. .
Transmission
Power transfer is ensured by a fully-synchromeshed six-speed manual transmission installed behind the (mid-) engine and combined with an asymmetric 40% / 65% locking differential. The sporty gear spread has been laid out for optimum elasticity and acceleration capacity. The car accelerates from O to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. Top speed is 310 km/h.
Chassis
The chassis relies on pure-bred racing technology: the front and rear double wishbones combined with special wheel carriers are the main elements of this sophisticated suspension system. The rear shock absorbers are actuated via pushrods. The front axle is fitted with BBS 11 J x 1S wheels and 295/35 ZR 18 tires, while the rear axle features BBS 13 J x 18 wheels with 335/30 ZR 18 tires. The car comes with a standard power steering system.
Brake system
The dimensions and technical sophistication of the brake system impressively reflect its close relationship with motorsport: the internally vented, cross-drilled 380 mm-diameter steel brake disks on all wheels are combined with 8-piston fixed calipers at the front and 4piston fixed calipers at the rear. The vehicle is equipped with an especially-tuned Bosch ABS system.
Bodywork
The 911 GT1 has a 911 steel unibody with integrated rollcage and side impact protection. The exterior body parts are made from carbon fibre allowing the car weight to be limited to 1,150 kg.
The front spoiler is integrated in the front section. Combined with the fixed rear spoiler it produces a downforce which is very high at medium driving speeds already and ensures an excellent directional stability at top speed.
The 73 liter fuel tank is front-mounted. The luggage space in the rear section has a volume of 150 liters.
The main headlamps carried over from the 911 Turbo feature Litronic low-beam lights as well as high-beam lights with variable-focus reflectors . The production equipment also includes two rear fog lights.
Interior
The cockpit of the 2-seat coupe is equipped with two leather-covered bucket seats and automatic three-point safety belts. The dashboard with its 5 round instruments and the 3-spoke steering wheel betrays its close relationship with other members of the Porsche 911 family. When creating the interior of the 911 GT1, designers deliberately used the experience gained with those models in order ensure good ergonomics and allow the driver to get rapidly accustomed to the car during everyday use.
The flair of sporty exclusivity is emphasized by the ample leather and carbon-fibre trim in the cockpit. The floor is cove re d with velvet carpets . The interior climate is controlled by a contin- uously variable blower combined with numerous adjustable air outlets and a newly developed heating system. An air conditioner is available as an option.
Main service intervals
Main service is required every 10,000 km or once per years whatever comes first
Warranty
Warranty is limited to 6 months for the entire car and to 3 years for paint and anti-corrosion as of the date of delivery in Weissach.
Type approval
Porsche AG has obtained type approval for the Porsche 911 GT1 under current ECE regulations, thus creating the necessary preconditions for GT1 licensing in all countries which acknowledge this type approval as a basis for registration.
