    Editing Skills and Essay Unit 
     

    • Editing codes to edit work of others 
    • Some work on character analysis of characters in self chosen library books 
    • Types of writing and form of an essay 


    Creative Application Time Capsule Diary Unit which allows students to create descriptive and creative works which apply essay writing skills and consider essay writing structures.

 

    Research Unit on a Decade's Events
    [ FIE component to be a review of a decade Îs event by their time travelling pen pal] 
     

    • Research Techniques ,on use of note taking forms and Library Visit to collect bibliographic information and take notes on event, persons involved, etc., in only one of those events... And to divide information into three sections, or approaches, or ways of thinking of that information (the body of the essay). See goals
    • Work on introduction to FIE correspondence novel project, which includes time travellers persona, is then followed by the essay, in the form of a letter from a time traveller. 
    • Peer editing class using the codes above and design work for a cover related to that decade. 
    • Good copy of letter (as a structured response by time traveller, is due after March Break.) 

    [FIE : response by stationary (in time) correspondence on the effect this event from the past had on the present and their lives.)



     Short Story Unit 
    [ FIE components: One imaginary description of a city caused in our time by the traveller's presence in the past. After the Biography Unit interupts this unit we begin concentration on character, and include the biographical subject (the artist) in one suspenseful short story which takes off from the moment of meeting the artist and evolves into a full short story.] 
     

    • Notes on Story Components 
    • Expert Group work analysing components of the story "A Mountain Legend"
    • Expert groups jigsawed into groups of four whose task is to combine knowledge and present to the class the way setting "is important to the development of all other components of the story."
    • As a class we then prepare a marking rubrique which they will then use to mark their peers' presentations. (blank grid)
    • Study of types of conflict, including natural, mechanical and internal conflicts, using Maelstrom II.
    • Study of foreshadowing, mood setting and character traits in the face of internal and external conflict in a suspense story using Uneasy Homecoming
    • Test on First Four Short Stories.
    • Break for Biography Unit
    • Study of imaginary and detailed setting using Calvino's "Invisible Cities". Practice on writing 3 "imaginary cities" based on what is going on in the student's chosen decade, and what might evolve in the future as a result of the traveller's interference. 
    • [One city will be used as good copy for the letter warning the time traveller of his effect on the future.] 
    • Editing day for the Year 2000 city or society caused by the time traveller's interference
    • Study of Character Personality,Character Motivation,Foreshading and the resulting Conflicts that develop using "On The Bridge" and corresponding question sheet.
    • Work trying to develop character studies using only works of art and a brief biography of an artist. (Here)
    • Library visit to work on writing the letter from the Time Traveller (Insertion of biography of an artist into a letter from the Time Traveller who has moved from one decade into another such that he/she encounters the artist, describes the artist`s character, and then includes the artist in the greater narrative of the whole FIE.) Time to research new decade for useful details. (lesson plan)
    • Poetry unit begins at this point with "I am" poem lesson which suggests "He is" poem of same form be written on the artist or another major character in FIE project short story development. Work time is given to complete and edit third letter.
    • Later, during narrative poetry section we will consider the narrative behind a poem and a film (Time after Time) and students will be given time to finish the final letters in their FIE project as a fully developing narrative.

    [ Time Traveller next letter (s) will be developing, through use of foreshadowing, suspenseful moments and significant changes of character, into a short story complete with climax and resolution. Poems can be inserted at any point in the FIE epistolary novel for poetry requirement.] 



    Biography Unit (and descriptive writing)
    [FIE components are a Mini-Biography on an obscure 20th century artist or writer, including a descriptive passage of a viewing of one of that artists works of art by the time traveller or the stationary correspondent.]


     

    • Biography Notes on elements of· plus group activity using film on Picasso to take notes on the various elements of Picasso`s life.  Practice orally creating story elements as we take up the elements of the Picasso`s biography each group would emphasize if telling a story with him as a character.
    • Internet research on obscure artists of 20th century. Use example of Cezanne. Use overhead example of student notesheet. (Claris version here)

    • Mini biography preparation and writing rough draft of biography in the form of a letter from the time traveller encountering and following this artist to provide answers. 



     Poetry Unit
    [Four poems must be inserted into the FIE project as is appropriate to the context of the developing story]

    This unit includes concentration on forms of poetry and will be practiced using both individual student experiences and their fictional experience of the FIE.

  • Lesson One - An introductory lesson using the "I am" poem structure.
  • Lesson One supplement - When we looked at some of my class`s last year`s poems, we produced a list of reasons why the poem is our favourite.
  • Lesson Two - Partner work researching poems and favourite poets.
  • Poetry Logbook begins - sections on similes, metaphors, symbols, rhythm in poetry. (PDF format is found here. Microsoft Word for Mac found here.)

    Reading Theatre Unit 
    [Fie component is a dialogue (radio play) involving the Time Travellerâs experience moving back in time beyond / before the 20th century.]

    Novel Unit on Walkabout or The Giver.

    [FIE component will be an inner monologue written by stationary correspondent to time traveller, after similar inner monologues are practiced using characters in one of the novels]
