Description: At 6' 0" and 185 lbs. Karnov has a thin frame, yet his many seasons as an adventurer has kept his muscles tight and strong. Karnov's complexion is pale, due to the countless hours spent within his lab. Karnov speaks with a strong tenor voice.
Karnov always keeps his black beard short and well trimmed. Karnov was born with a birthmark upon the back of his left shoulder. (See the background section for more details upon this birthmark and its legacy.) Karnov is often clothed in green robes which act as a Robe of the Magi. Along with the robes, Karnov is known to wear a dark green cloak which acts as a Cloak of Displacement.
    
Combat: Over the years Karnov has become quite the creative opponent when it comes to combat. Preferring spells to do his damage, Karnov is known to memorize quite a few combat oriented spells. Not long ago, Karnov read a powerful tome of magic which permanently increased Karnov's casting ability. Karnov now casts all his spells as if he where two levels higher. (i.e. if he is 10th level Karnov casts as a 12th level mage.)
Karnov has been known to keep a few magical wands "up his sleeve." (See Bracers of Defense for more details.) Plus, since Karnov's recently acquired a Staff of the Magi, he has added this new "toy" to his style of combat.
When in combat, Karnov will normally choose the fastest way to end the battle. If Karnov is within a party of adventurers he will help to keep those in his party alive as well as he can. (Its always good to have people around to use.) Yet, Karnov has no problems fleeing a fight if he is out numbered, or the threat to great.
If possible Karnov will take the party with him when he flees, if not, well... Karnov's "good streak" isn't strong enough for him to die for.

Background: Both Karnov and his twin brother Eric where born along the southern edges of Barnoiva, Ravenloft. Just outside of the land of Baron Strahd Von Zarovich. Both Karnov and his brother where born with a rare birthmark upon their left shoulders.
This birthmark resembles that of a raven. The birthmark is so detailed and true to life that is often mistaken for a tattoo. The birthmark is the result of curse placed upon the twins great ancestors.
As legend has it, one of the twins ancient relatives was a woman by the name of Sylvia Vanessa Raventhorn. This woman lived among a tribe Visitini who where in trade with the Baron Strahd Von Zarovich. She became caught up in a scandal with the Baron.
Not much is known about this scandal, but what is known is this. The scandal caused her to be "kicked out" of the Visitini tribe and the elders of that tribe placed a powerful curse upon her, and her descendents.
The curse was to tie her bloodline with that of the Baron's for all eternity. Her bloodline would be in bondage to the Baron's until the time when the raven arrives and frees her bloodline from the bondage of the Baron's. This freedom will cost the raven much, and the Baron even more so.
In order to stop this event from every occurring, Countess Olivia Strahd Von Zarovich, (Strahd's vampire daughter) attempted to slaughter the entire Raventhorn bloodline. Both Karnov and Eric escaped the slaughter, but at the price of the parents lives. Karnov and Eric are the only surviving members of the Raventhorn bloodline.
The birthmark has certain powers, all of which has not yet been revealed to either of the twins. The powers which are know to Karnov are; any time Karnov casts a spell the birthmark radiates a bright light, the light has no effect on the spell or the caster. The birthmark has an intuitive
protection power, which only will only go into effect if Karnov or Eric are in a position in which they have no other form of protection. (The most
common occurrence of this is when either of the twins are unconscious.)
Recently Karnov was in an astral battle with an extremely powerful lich and the birthmark added to Karnov's power. It did this by increasing the strength of Karnov's spells and protecting his astral body from harm during a massive "nuclear" type of explosion in astral space. These are the only powers of the birthmark that Karnov or Eric have managed to "uncover" so far.     
    
Role-Playing Notes: Karnov is a complex individual, who has an eccentric attitude towards life. Karnov is an extremely intelligent man with a very sarcastic, and often times, cynical mouth. Throughout most of his life Karnov has professed to be an atheistic wizard. One who has never believed in any form of deity nor witnessed any
events to change his mind upon the subject.
Due to this, Karnov has taken up the habit of verbally "bashing" paladins and clerics, viewing there chosen professions as a waste in time. Needless to say, that due to Karnov's attitude, mouth, and other actions he has created quite a plethora of enemies.
Due to this high amount of enemies, whenever one of them decides to make the ritualistic remark, "I'll kill you for this Raventhorn." Karnov calmly replies to them, "Take a number." This has almost become a trademark for him. Karnov, like most wizards, is a power monger. He is one who has a strong lust for power and the ability to control it. Not to mention the fact that Karnov is a fairly greedy wizard, one who has a price for almost everything.
This lust for power and greed is offset by Karnov's "good steak." This good streak is, as Karnov wife refers to it as, "the one thing that makes him human." Karnov, as much he hates to admit it, has a conscience. Due to this, Karnov never allows his lust for power, or greed ever overcome his reason.
Now even though Karnov does have a "good streak," don't get the wrong idea about this wizard. Karnov does not have much respect for authority or to the law. Karnov is willing to, and often times has, bend or break any law to accomplish what he calls the "greater good."
