The Night Watchmen
"Desperate times call for desperate measures."

Atlanta, Georgia. 1998. The Inner City.

"Officer down! Officer down! Send backup immediately!"

"Roger, Unit 11. Dispatching backup and emergency medical team. Please confirm your location and state your situation."

"Techwood Drive, just south of the Omni! I'm on the bridge over the old viaducts!" A flash of blaster fire shot past him, scoring the paint on the roof of the squad car and shattering the blue lights. "Christ!" he shouted ducking behind the car door.

"My partner, Officer Johnson, has been hit! We were investigating a disturbance on the bridge when he was hit from behind by blaster fire!" Shouting and more gunfire emanated from the shadows beneath the road. "He was knocked over the railing -- I ... I can't see him! I think it was LAF, but I'm not sure."

"What the f...! It's them!" the officer shouted into the mic. "It's the Night Watchmen! I can see Titan ... and that must be Omega! Dispatch, I'm trying to get this on the video cam, but they're all over the place! Can't ..." The shouting below grew louder, punctuated by the crash of wood and the slam of bodies against metal.

Then, silence.

"Dispatch ... something's ... Stand by." The sound of someone climbing over the railing caught the officer's attention. With the smell of cigar smoke and an audible grunt, the tangled bodies of a half a dozen LAF soldiers wrapped in electrical cables landed on the ground in front of his feet. The puzzled policeman leaned over the railing and peered into the darkness. He thought he briefly saw the glint of metallic armor, and perhaps a pair of glowing red eyes ... or maybe it was just his imagination.
