The 6th incarnation of the this 50 mile run was held in surprisingly pleasant conditions, given the humid 100 degree temperatures we had been experiencing earlier in the week. This prompted the Non-RD in a rare moment of compassion to offer, for the first and last time ever, an "official" 50K option. While a few folks opted for the 50K, most rolled the dice and at least attempted the real deal. But since the whole purpose of this run is to prepare for upcoming 100s, folks are free to do whatever they want and everyone certainly got their money's worth on this glorious day.
And while it isn't a "race" there were some impressive performances. Jasper Halekas and Wendell Doman were running together until the infamous Mother's Loop where Jasper pulled away and went on to become the first person to ever break 9 hours. Because this course is pretty difficult, 11,300' of climb with no course markings (only written directions and marked maps), people are generally discouraged from doing it as their first 50M but Jenny Hoffman, running her first 50M, shattered the woman's course record by more than an hour and a half with an impressive 9:57. Daniel Larsen, also running his first 50M, tied with Jenny and Amy Moran and John Burton also ran their first 50M!
But perhaps most impressive was Kap'n Kirk Boissereee who has done this run a number of times so "thought" he knew the course. Well, after apparently sleeping through the pre-run briefing where a couple of minor course changes were explained, 3M into the run he took the old course so missed a turn. Now this is not a major deal because the 2 routes rejoin in about a mile and the way the Kap'n went was only about 1/4 of a mile shorter. As I said, this is pretty much a training run so what folks do is up to them and 1/4M is no big deal. Well, on the way back to the finish at M46 the Kap'n, evidently wanting to get his money's worth, goes UP the hill to do the section that he missed in the morning at M3! For that he won the first annual "You Da Man" award!!!
