A former England under-21 international, Beckham came to Old Trafford as an associated
schoolboy in June 1989 and turned pro in Jan 1993, four months after making his debut as sub
in League Cup at Brighton.
He had loan spell at Preston in the 1994-95 season but really captured the imagination of the
United fans when scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory over champions Blackburn at the start of
the 1995-96 season.
Leytonstone born Beckham was drawn to United by his father Ted's love of the club, United
beating off the attentions of many London clubs before signing him.
David played a major role in United's double season, scoring crucial goals in the Premiership,
and the winner in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.
David was selected in Glenn Hoddle's first England squad, and made his international debut
against Moldova.
Beckham was a very influential figure in the 96/97 Championship winning team, scoring many
goals from his midfield berth.
On the opening day of the season Beckham scored 'the goal of the season' at Wimbledon. In
the 90th minute of the match he picked up the ball in his own half, looked up, and hit a firm lob
which looped over a bemused Neil Sullivan in the goal.
Spectacular goals and pinpoint passes ensured Beckham was voted PFA Young Player of the
Year for the season, and he was also voted into the PFA Premiership XI.
Beckham is now widely regarded as the hottest property in English football, and was the only
player to appear in all eight of the World Cup qualifiers for England.
Beckham has one of the most photographed faces in Britain at the moment, he and his girlfriend,
Victoria 'Posh Spice' Adams are the darlings of the media.
His main ambition now surely must be to captain Manchester United and England at some point
in the future, a step in keeping with his meteoric rise in English football, and a feat that is
definitely not beyond him.
