JOSEPH COULSON

JOSEPH COULSON was christened July 2, 1669, in Hartshorne, Derbyshire, England. He married MARGARET MARY EVANS on March 11, 1702. Margaret was born about 1675 in Hartshorne, Derbyshire, England.

In the fall of 1703, the couple and their young son, Thomas, emigrated to America and settled in the German and Dutch colony of Quakers at Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Joseph petitioned the Court of Germantown for a license to establish an "ordinary," or tavern, and the petition was granted on March 28, 1704. He also paid into the school tax system during the years 1706-1708 for his son Thomas to attend Pastorius' School.

JOSEPH COULSON died February 1, 1707/1708, in his late thirties, in Germantown, and is buried in Hood's Cemetery, Germantown Avenue and Logan Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His grave was once pointed out as the oldest marked grave in the cemetery. The stone, which has since disappeared, read:

Here lyeth the body of Joseph Coulston
Once husband of Margaret Coulston
Son of Capt. Thomas Coulston of
Hartshorn in old Derbyshire, England
who departed this life the first day
of February 1707/8, aged 38 years and 8 months

Note the use of the "t" in the name in this instance. Margaret died in 1715 in Germantown.

Henry J. Coulson noted that a brother of Joseph Coulson was the captain of a ship trading between Italian and English ports. He goes on to say that "Mrs. E. R. Coulson of Emporia, Kansas, has in her possession an OLD embroidered smoking cap dating from 1692 which belonged to him." In addition, Mrs. Coulson was said to possess "an old wine chest brought from England years ago, also an old fashioned tall eight-day-clock and a number of books and letters that belonged to Coulsons of the last century." It is noted that the only brothers of Joseph who are known to have survived infancy were Samuel, Thomas, Joshua and Seth.

JOSEPH COULSON and MARGARET MARY EVANS were the parents of the following children:

It may be that Joseph Coulson was married prior to his marriage to Margaret Mary Evans. His marriage to her occurred when he was approximately 33 years of age. At some point after his emigration to America, three brothers, William, Charles and Francis Coulson, emigrated to America and are said to have visited Thomas Coulson, Joseph's son, in West Nottingham.
