Soccer for Athletically-Gifted Inner City Girls
In March 1997, our nonprofit, tax-deductible charity began selecting (with the assistance of San Antonio and Harlandale PE teachers) the 8-12 year old girls who would most benefit from the best available soccer skills training, without regard to their parents' ability to pay. Our goal is, within 3 years, to build teams that can compete with the best in the nation and the world. All coaches are volunteers and we solicit and obtain support from businesses, foundations, government and individuals.

For Fall 1998, we formed U11 and U12 teams of mostly novices to play in Division II competition against girls with years of soccer experience. Many are playing up 1-3 age groups. The athleticism of the Pride girls should keep them in the games and they will speed their learning of soccer skills by playing against better competition. Training is year-round (except for mid-summer and mid-winter breaks) on Tuesday/Thursday/Friday evenings at Connell Middle School. Approximately 30 of the girls we are training are from the mostly low-income South Side of San Antonio, Texas.
