Snails
I have grown very fond of my various snails. Currently I have Red Ramshorns, Malaysian Trumpet Snails, Gold Mysteries, and an Ivory Mystery.
This is a Red Ramshorn snail. I really like these guys. When they are babies, they are pink with red polka dots, and as the snail grows, the snail turns blood red.
The Reds max out at about 1.5", and are very prolific. They are great algae eaters, love dead or dying leaves, but will not eat healthy plants. They also help clean up uneaten fish food and fish dietrus. These snails lay their eggs in transparent discs below the water-line on most surfaces. Mine seem to like to lay them on the silicone in the tank.
I have had such a boom of Reds that I have been shipping them out to fellow hobbyists for the cost of shipping. They really add a nice touch to a planted aquarium.
This is one of my Gold Mystery snails. According to some reading I have done, these are the same thing as Apple Snails. These snails have an air-tube, and periodically go to the surface to get oxygen. These snails will lay pinkish colored eggs above the water surface. I have two of these, and so far, they haven't laid any eggs. You can tell this one has grown quite a bit since I got it because the new growth is algae free. When I got them, they had green spot algae on their shells.
Here is a shot of a Golden and a Red.

Double Goldens! These two hang out together quite a bit, but I still don't have any eggs. For snails, they get around pretty fast, too. I also have an Ivory Mystery snail, but so far, he hasn't offered to pose for me.
