Walking Away, The Finale Banner

As they approach Roswell, Max and Liz see flashes and smoke.
"What IS that?" asks Liz. Max pulls over the car and stops.
"Roswell's under attack," says Max.
"Could THAT be the Pod Chamber?"
"Yes," says Max. "Tess could have given Kivar the location of the Pod Chamber before she died."
"Then we've failed," says Liz.
"No, we still have time," says Max, knowing that time has already run out for the rest of their friends and family. "Liz, I have to tell you something."
By the look on Max's face, she knows it's not good, but it's something she has been bracing herself for. She remembers what Fmax told her years ago.
"Isabel, Michael, Maria, Kyle ... they're all dead, Liz."
"I know."
Max lowers his head.
"How?" asks Liz.
"They were all exposed to the biotech through Ava," says Max.
Liz puts her hand to her head.
"We never should have sent Ava here," says Liz.
"It's the only safe place to have brought her."
"How's that?"
"Bringing Ava to The Pod Chamber confines the spread of the virus."
"At the cost of our friends."
"Yes," says Max.
"You should have told me, Max."
"It wouldn't have made a difference."
Liz looks at the billowing smoke in the distance.
"No, I guess it wouldn't." She didn't know whether to be angry or sad.
"I'm sorry it has to be this way, Liz," says Max.
"But it doesn't, does it ... have to be this way?"
"No."
"What about us? We've been exposed, too, haven't we?"
"Yes, but we're okay. I slipped the antidote into your food in Boston."
"You knew I wouldn't take it if there wasn't enough to go around."
"I had to make sure our systems were clean."
"Before we went back in time? Could this infect any timeline?"
Liz takes Max's silence as confirmation. She frowns, then nods resolutely.
"What's next?"
"We go to the Pod Chamber."
"Now?"
"We'll wait until the initial attack is over."
"How long's that?"
"Maybe an hour or two."
"Good, that's just enough time."

Roswell is in shambles as Kivar and Lonnie walk through the debris. There is no building left standing, save one -- the old Crashdown Cafe. Nicholas, in battle gear, walks out the front door .
"Wouldn't you know it," he says, "the only place we missed would be here."
"What's here?" asks Kivar.
"This is it, the old Crashdown Cafe. Where it all began."
"He holds up a plate of chocolate cake."
"Try a piece. It's called the Alien Abyss."
"Get outta here," says Lonnie.
"It's actually not bad," says Nicholas.
Kivar slams it to the ground. He looks at Nicholas with contempt. He never liked Nicholas -- always too cocky, but a good military man. And this whiny teenage petulance Nikky adopted -- he absolutely hated it. Well, after the battle, he could exile Nicholas to some intergalactic wasteland to keep him occupied. Better yet, he could leave him in NY.
"You can have your cake later."
Nicholas tries to hide his anger. Lonnie smirks. Nicholas throws her a daggered look.
"I'm sooo terrified," she says.
"Oh, the hell with it," says Nicholas, pulling out his death ray. He lets Lonnie and Kivar have it.
"I feel better," he says.

The barrage has stopped for the moment. Max cautiously drives up to the Granilith. He halfway expects to see Kivar's men guarding the perimeter, but there is no one -- not a soul, not a sound. Liz is still scribbling in the notepad she had picked up when they tanked up the car.
"What are you writing?" asks Max as he turns off the ignition.
"A final record, I guess," she says.
"Are you ready?"
"In a minute."
She rereads at her words, then puts down her pen.
"Okay," she says, closing the notepad. "I'm done."
"What are you going to do with it?"
"I don't know," she says, taking the notepad with her as she exits the car.
Max gets out of the car. Liz is looking up to the pod chamber entrance.
"Let me go first," says Max.
"No," says Liz, steeling herself, "we go together."
Max and Liz join hands and walk up the rock face.

Nicholas' cell phone rings as he licks the last bits of chocolate frosting from his fingers. Several of the foot soldiers around look at him in disbelief.
"What," he says to them curtly before he answers the phone. They cautiously back off.
"Yeah," says Nicholas, then pauses. "Worked like a charm."

Max and Liz enter the Pod Chamber. It is eerily empty and quiet.
"There's something wrong," says Liz. "Shouldn't they all be here?"
"Maybe they're in the Granilith chamber," says Max as he feels prickles raise at the base of his neck. Something felt very wrong.
"This doesn't feel right," says Liz.
"I know."
At the Granilith, the timer has been set as prearranged by Isabel. But there was no Isabel, no Michael, no Maria, no Kyle ... no Ava. Unless they went somewhere else to die -- to spare them the pain of seeing their good friends dead. But Max had advised Isabel to keep everyone here, just in case. But there was no one when there should have been someone.
"Where are they, Max?"
"I don't know," he says. "They should be here."
"Maybe they're still alive," says Liz.
"Maybe," says Max. "Or maybe someone moved them."
"This is not good," says Liz.
"Well, that depends on your point of view," says a familiar voice from behind them.
They turn.
"Tess!" says Liz.
"You're dead," says Max.
"Noooo ... that would be Ava," she says.
"How ? ..."
"Mind control," says Liz.
Tess smiles and shrugs.
"It's my gift," says Tess.
"Why? ... Why did you betray us?" asks Max.
"Why not? You never loved me. And Kivar was my brother."
"Kivar?" says Liz, slightly shocked.
"Was?" asks Max.
"Dead. Met with an unfortunate end. And when you're dead, as rightful queen, it's all mine -- from every side."
"I won't let it happen."
"Oh, yes, I will. I know what you did to the Granilith. Your friends, your family ... they told me everything."
"You were in the body bag we shipped," says Liz.
"It wasn't hard to make the switch."
"What did you with Ava's body?"
"Maybe you would like to ask your colleague. Spare parts and all. Isn't that what glass jars are for?"
"Ethan! He's been in on this from the beginning!"
"Too bad he'll never get to spend his money and enjoy his new career!"
"You. ... I thought it was Kivar."
"When this wretched planet dies, I'll be dancing in Antar."
"You'll destroy the universe."
"Don't think I don't know what you are trying to do, Max. You'll never get to the Granilith." Tess waves her hand and Max and Liz fly back against the wall. Liz drops her notebook.
"Are you okay, Max? asks Liz, getting on her knees and looking at the cut on Max's forehead.
"Yeah," says Max. "We have to stop her."
"It's too late, Max," says Tess. "You can't stop me."
"But I can," says Isabel, grabbing Tess head from behind and locking her hands around her head.
Tess begins to scream as Isabel hands begin to generate unthinkable power.
"This is for Alex," she says. And to Max and Liz, "Go now, there isn't any time."
"I can't leave you," says Max, getting to his feet, Liz right behind him.
"You have to," says Isabel.
"She's right," says Liz.
Tess crumbles to the ground.
Max looks at Tess, then Isabel.
"Hurry," says Liz, pointing to the clock.
Max quickly hugs Isabel, then takes Liz's hand.
"Your notebook," says Max.
Liz realizes she has dropped it. She looks back at the notebook, which has fallen open on the ground.
"It doesn't matter" she says.
They walk to the Granilith and together touch its core. A moment later, the Granilith pulls them in and they disappear in space and time.

Walking Away, Epilogue Banner

Isabel, the lone survivor, picks up Liz's notebook and begins to read.

I am walking away from this world into a new world, or rather an old one. A world still teeming with possibilities for an ordinary, 17-year-old girl thrust into an extraordinary world. My name is Liz Parker Evans. It's a new beginning.

The self-destruct triggers the awaited explosion.

The End
