Electric Light Orchestra II
Jeff Lynne takes over the group upon Roy Wood's departure, reducing the instrumental complexities of Wood's eclectic, often bizairre experimentation (strings, basoon, clarinet, oboe, hunting horn...) into more disciplined, focused orchestral arrangements combined with Lynne's rapidly developing talent for crafting catchy lyrics with popular melodies. In short, Lynne focused on quality over quantity, and the result of Lynne's full control of the group was their landmark single, Roll Over Beethoven, a remake of Chuck Berry's original hit.with the defining ELO touch- a moving string intro of Beethoven's fifth seguing into a blend of old fashioned  Chuck Berry guitar licks combined with the thrumming of a full string section. The results were not only bold, but powerful- and   in one song was revealed the heart and soul of art rock as defined by the Electric Light Orchestra.

With Wood taking Hunt and Woolam with him to Wizzard, along with another ex-Mover, Hugh Mc Dowell, Lynne rebuilt ELO with Wilf Gibson, violin, who joined the group on their first British tour in 1972 ; Bass player Michael De Albuquerque, and cellists Mike Edwards.and Colin Walker. Soon after the album's release, Lynne was back in the studio working on their next album, On The Third Day.
