Here are some helpful hints and tips I've picked up while planning my wedding.

All the Bridal magazines and past brides say to get a 3 inch, 3-ring binder and dividers (with pockets if available). Each divider will represent an area of the wedding (photography, catering, etc.).
I use this more than the binder- get index cards, index card dividers (I made my own with tabs and index cards) and a card holder. Create tabs for the alphabet (put invitation names w/addresses in this section) and all parts of the wedding (music, groomsmen, etc.). I have numbers of all the places for each area of the wedding in here and I attach small pictures to cards of things I like. Create a card for every member of your party and place accordingly. This will be something my sister will be able to use when she gets married because I already have local numbers for various items collected for her, if not, she can use the box and tabs.
To save money on invitations and stamps, do not order RSVP cards and just estimate an extra 10 to 15 people on your catering list. If your list is mostly family and friends (not acquaintances), then you'll know who will be coming by word of mouth.
When ordering invitations, always order extra. There's always someone you'll forget. (I've updated my invite list 4 times within a month.)
If you're getting married around a busy weekend/holiday, send out "save the date" cards to let family and friends know in advanced, specially if you have guest out of town. Be creative with these. You can create them on the computer, hand draw them, what ever!! I found blank cards at a card store and hand wrote a note in each one (including postage, I spent $3 on this). You can even create a postcard. This is also an opportunity to announce your engagement to family far away.
I hope this has helped you in some way. If you have any other bits of information you want to share, please email me.
