Rauchath
Free at last! The dainty little bronze hatchling shook off the fragments of shell sticking to her glimmering hide and creeled loudly, looking all around her. Wasn't there supposed to be someone out there, waiting for her? She glanced over every Bonder nearby, even the crying young red off to the side, but none particularly caught her eye. How annoying.
She shook her head and, with a bit of sadness, returned to the pile of eggs, sitting by herself to watch the rest of the hatching. Her hatching, she though rebelliously as the crowd turned its collective eye away from her and back to the eggs yet to hatch.
The next was a dazzling silver, and Rauchath - for that was the young bronze's name - watched with some envy as she went unerringly to one of the last girls on the Dunes. They were meant for one another, as no one seemed to be meant for her.
The very last girl was claimed by a large cream, and the last boy by the following male green. Four eggs left, though only one showed signs of life, and no more Bonders. A handsome gold male emerged from that one egg with a little help from his mother and was as surprised as she had been to find no one waiting.
"No Bonders?" he asked aloud. "Was I really that late?" He started to crawl back to where his dam waited when he saw the red female curled in a corner. They conversed silently, then the newly Bonded pair announced their names.
Rauchath was definitely annoyed, and more than a bit depressed, but she was hungry as well. Food first, moping later. Rising carefully from the small hollow she'd made for herself in the sand, she followed the other dragonets and their Bonds (of which she was not envious, she told herself viciously, firmly) out to the waiting bowls of meat that the Caer's inhabitants had brought out for just that purpose.
Suddenly a little purple female, the only purple in the clutch actually, gave a childish bugle and rushed one of the humans carrying a bowl filled to the brim. She succeeded in knocking the poor man down and scattering meat all over the sand underfoot, then stood guard over 'her' meat while other hatchlings tried to get at it.
The bronze snorted. Such children, with their Bonds to smooth everything over for them. They certainly weren't getting in any trouble for their rude and selfish behavior. She, thankfully, had much better manners than that. Sniffing hautily, she waited with great patience until more was brought and carefully ate it, one bite at a time. She didn't have someone to help her if she choked like a wimp, even though any of the Caer's inhabitants would have been immediate in their assistance. This girl would show the world that she could take care of herself and didn't need some foolish human to depend on. She didn't need anyone.
