MIAMI BEACH, Fla., July 18 (UPI) -- South Florida law enforcement officials say the person who killed fashion designer Gianni Versace has made some ``major mistakes,'' but they do not want to discuss those miscues publicly.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokesman John Coffey told NBC's ``Today'' suspected killer Andrew Cunanan likely is listening to all the media and would not make the mistakes again if they are identified.

``Cunanan is a smart man,'' Coffey says, adding, ``he's not smart as far as what he's doing now, these killings, because he's made some major mistakes.''

Coffey says a tremendous amount of manpower has been committed to the manhunt for the suspected killer, with as many as 150 people working the case.

There are conflicting reports about the slaying of a doctor in Miami Springs, Fla., that authorities thought might have been the work of Cunanan.

A man fitting his description was seen running from a home where the victim was found. Metro-Dade Public Safety Director Carlos Alvarez says police have no reason to believe the slaying was connected to the Versace killing, but some investigators say bloodhounds appeared to pick up Cunanan's scent near the scene.

FBI spokeswoman Anne Figueiras says agents ``strongly believe'' Cunanan still is in south Florida.

Since he was identified as Versace's suspected killer, hundreds of calls have poured in from people who think they've seen Cunanan in Key West, Boca Raton, Fla., and even in a hotel blocks from the slaying scene.

Meanwhile, thousands of people are expected to attend a memorial Mass to be celebrated today in Miami Beach for Versace, whose remains were flown overnight to Italy where a service is scheduled outside Milan.
