My fellow gamers, I come to bring you the first ever NES Scene interview!
...ta-dah.
w00t!
Here with my tonight is my special guest Lanny Cox!
Hell-oo!
Well first off I'd like to say thanks for volunteering to be my first guest here!
It's a honor, dude!
For THIS site, it certainly is!
Or at least it WILL...
One day...
Of course.....
I note a touch of sarcasm there...
Hehehe.
First off, I'd like you to tell us about your site.
Ok..... my site, The Crystalis Awareness Foundation, is dedicated towards promoting one of the best, and most underrated games in the NES's time. My site differs from that of the typical shrine, in that it is focused towards gearing up interest, rather than just bringing back nostalgia and memories.
I feel the story and mechanics of Crystalis still have a lot of potential for future sequels, and I want to encourage that.
Funny that you mention that, I actually learned of a Crystalis sequel being made and was asked if I'd be interested in helping with the site of a guy who was helping making it.
I know this is hard to believe, and it was even for me, but it wasn't quite so difficult to believe once I learned that the game was being made for the PC...
Ahh, it seems that the game continues to have a strong cult following. I think this trend kind of stretches broadly across the NES spectrum, in that games like Super Dodgeball are also being remade for newer systems.
I just can't wait to see River City Ransom for GBA or Gamecube!
That'd be nice, just sad that many of the great games were made by companies that no longer exist...
What's your oppinion about Crystalis compared to Legend of Zelda?
I think they are both absolutely awesome games, but I don't consider them of the same genre/time period. I actually only got my copy of Zelda the other day, and I was amazed, it really has a way of holding one's interest. The time frame skews the quality though, I think a Zelda game in 1990-1991 would have been amazing, and maybe a Crystalis-beater. But I guess we'll never know.
A Crystalis sequel for the GameCube, wouldn't that be nice.
Yes, but I'd rather have a huge game with NES-quality graphics than a mediocre game with great graphics. I absolutely hated the N64-era Zelda series.
Me too.
So how long have you been working on your site?
The site is a fairly recent entry, I think it was started in June or July, I'm not 100 percent sure. It's been kinda slow in the way of updates, I'm trying to drum up support, but response to the Crystalis Army has been rather underwhelming. I'm starting a campaign to get other webmasters to carry the Crystalis Awareness Foundation banner on their site to show their allegiance, that should help.
...I might be interested.
That would be a great help, thank you very much!
Just e-mail me after this interview.
Ok dude.
And for all the fans, that site is http://crystalisaf.cjb.net . Get online, show your support, we need all the help we can get.
Let's discuss the typical modern NES gamer.
Do you think they've matured?
Absolutely.
...ALL of them?
No, definitely not.
I think what the NES scene is missing is structure.
Like...?
There are too many sites, too many message boards. We need to consolidate our time and effort, to benefit the community. We should reach out to the people who are just now starting to re-discover the NES, and show them all the great games available.
Indeed.
Most NES fans seem to post at the Nesecity board. Do you think this is the best message board to post at?
Absolutely not! The board is a mess, not related to the NES in any way. The whole system is based on cliques, which I think is a joke. New members don't seem to fit in or belong, and are ignored. I pretty much have allegiance to the NESWorld and RoyalRanger's boards.
I posted there for a VERY short while, until some people began impersonating others and saying very offensive things, at which point I realized the board was horrible. I agree with posting at the forums you mentioned.
Yeah, it seems that the board in general represents the immaturity of the scene kiddies who go around hacking sites and destroying people's work.
How do you feel about new NES sites and how they seem to be taking a back-seat(VERY back)to old ones?
I think the old sites deserve respect, but the newer ones are sometimes better. Sites like NESPlayer, The Warp Zone, and yours are shunned for NESWorld, |TSR's site, etc. which are barely updated anymore. I guess it's time to move on, but the stalwarts still get their followers.
Yes, quite so. People seem to be failing to recognize those with new material.
Definitely. But there has to be balance, i'm not inclined to follow a site just because it's new (or old), there are new sites which suck, but old ones too.
The NES. It's been around for roughly two decades, and people are still playing it. At this rate, when do you think the time will come when people cease to enjoy it?
Hmm..... technologically, when it fails, people will stop. There will be emulators, but nothing is as good as the real thing. However, it still has a LONG life left, and I expect it to greatly outlast systems that still aren't released yet, like Gamecube, etc.
Do you believe that in this time of graphics domination, that there's still room for gameplay?
Hmm.... yeah, to an extent. There are still great modern games that mix amazing graphics with seamless gameplay, the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series for example. However, no system will ever match the mystique the NES had. There's nothing like opening a brand new game like I did tonight and smelling the inside of the box and looking at the poster with all the newest releases of 1988.
Strong words. STRONG WORDS. Those, that only a NES gamer can prov-
SIR COX, THOU SHALT DIE!!!
Whu-WHAT? What are YOU doing here?
What? Go to hell, Link! It's over!! She's mine now!!
MWAHAHAHA!
Thou knows NOT the ends of my evil! Thou hath merely SCORCHED the snake, not killed it!
...the hell does that mean?
Hmm...... he must have had a botched surgery somewhere...
LANNY DISLIKES LINK.
Thy life is naught but a tale told by an idiot.
. ...will you stop quoting Macbeth?
SLEEP NO MORE! Link doth MURDER SLEEP!
Lanny, I think he hath challenged thou to a DUEL!
I shalt not be silenced, for Crystalis is might, and you shall be kamuffined!!!
....know....THIS....I hath died but ONCE....a coward doth die MANY TIMES...
Ahh!! He hath been silenced!! I am in need of a hearty workout! Dost this village have any whorehouses?
I commend thee! Here, 'tis ten schillings, spend as thee wish!
HUZZAH!
...your swordsmanship is commendable.
Thanketh you.
Thou art a hearty warior, Sir Lanny. And thus our quest doth dwell to an end. Fair thee well to ye all, and to all a good night!
