Over lunch, Producer Roy Winsor asked Mary to be in a new serial he was developing, Search For Tomorrow. From 1951 to 1986 Mary played Joanne Gardner during the entire run of the soap. "I grew up on that show. I was 22. We were inventing television. And it was live. We made it up as we went along," she wistfully recalled.

Mary was responsible for many TV firsts, such as: Her second pregnancy was written into Jo's storyline. In 1962, she was the first daytimer to be nominated for an Emmy. "And, I was the first to bring music to TV. I picked up my guitar and started singing [on-air]. Now, everyone does that. But nobody had done it then. I did an album of songs I'd done on the show, which sold about 8000 records. Back then, that was a lot!" she told. [......] On September 3rd, 2001, the woman who joined Guiding Light in 1996 as Aunt Meta was the first to celebrate her 50th anniversary on daytime.
