Faramir profile   Faramir ~ David Wenham.

He could see Faramir's face, which was now unmasked: it was stern and commanding, and a keen wit lay behind his searching glance.

Faramir, the second son to Denethor, Steward of Gondor is the younger brother to Boromir.  He enters the story as a captain of rangers patrolling Ithilien - a country between Gondor and Mordor that has been beset by Orcs.  Faramir is Faramir close-upprone to premonitory dreams and feels his brother is dead when he dreams of Boromir floating on the River Anduin in the Elven boat.  Days later, his feelings are confirmed when Boromir's horn is found washed up on the riverbank broken in two.

Faramir's father Denethor shows resentment towards him for his favoured brother's death.  It is written that Gondorians take pride in their monarchs, their army, and the antiquity of their culture.  They have a highly developed code of honor and ethics.  Faramir has spent many years scouting and defending the borders of Gondor to earn his father's acceptance.

Faramir, Boromir and Aragorn are all descendants of the men of Numenor - an island given to men by the Elves for their help in a long ago war.  When the people of Numenor were tricked by Sauron and became 'evil', Iluvatar - the god of Middle-earth, destroyed the island with a great wave and only a few virtuous humans survived.  Those survivors established Gondor.

Faramir close-up     "Faramir has grown up in a strange situation...but not an uncommon one.  Growing up in a family where he has a father who obviously prefers the oldest son.  Sometimes fathers prefer the youngest son but not in this case."

Since the loss of Boromir he does the duty of two sons.

David's view on the rest of the cast: "Wonderful.  Peter was very brave to choose only the actors that he wanted to choose for the movie, despite the fact that a lot of big stars wanted to be involved in it.  Peter choose not very famous actors, like me for example, just because he thought that we were good for the roles."

A few changes were made for Faramir between book and film for The Two Towers.  In contrast to the film, Faramir never had any desire to keep the Ring for the use of his people, nor did he take Frodo and Sam to Osgiliath.  In the cave, the map that Faramir and his aide look at is the map featured in the books, drawn by Tolkien's son, Christopher.Faramir looking at map   "I'm sure that there is a jealousy from Denethor towards Gandalf of that friendship of Gandalf and Faramir.  And it manifests itself in a frustration with the youngest son by Denethor and an obvious preference for Boromir."

"I would not take this thing, if it lay by the highway.  Not were Minas Tirith falling in ruin and I alone could save her..."

David was born on September 21, 1965 in Marrickville, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.  He has 1 brother and 5 sisters.  On March 13, 2002, David signed up as an "Ancient Forest Guardian" in Sydney.  In 2001, on stage at Adelaide's Festival Theatre, he narrated historical Australian texts accompanied by the city's symphony orchestra.  The pieces included the former Prime Minister's famous 1992 Redfern speech on the need for Aboriginal reconciliation and native title laws.  Other film credits of David's include: Dust, The Bank, Russian Doll, Pure, Moulin Rouge and Better than Sex.  However he is probably best known for his role as Diver Dan in the TV series, SeaChange.

Faramir looking at map - close-up     Faramir was a captain that men would follow, that he would follow, even under the shadow of the black wings.

On becoming a good horseman after filming: "I made recently three movies with horses.  They are very unpredictable performers or I found them very unpredictable because I grew up in a suburb in Sydney.  I didn't grow up surrounded by horses, so it's a skill that I've had to learn.  You have to know that a very few people ride horses in Australia.  Most of them live in cities.  But when an Australian rides a horse, he's unbelievable."  Faramir was born in 2983, the same year as Samwise.  In the years that followed the fall of Sauron, Pippin named his son Faramir who eventually married Sam's daughter, Goldilocks.

"We are truth-speakers, we men of Gondor.  We boast seldom, and then perform, or die in the attempt."  ~Faramir.

"Boromir is more hot-tempered, more red-blooded.  Faramir nearly is like the ideal person, the ideal man.  In a way.  There is wonderful stuff in the book about the fact that he'd never killed a creature without a good reason.  He's a man that is very easy to respect."
