With Love To... KATHERINE & HUNTER! | home
Never Say Die
CBS Soaps In Depth, August 29th, 2000 - by Amy Helmes:
Katherine Kelly Lang is betting that Brooke has what it takes to be a survivor:
Katherine Kelly Lang: Your character on The Bold and the Beautiful recently survived a devastating car accident that claimed the life of her lover's alcoholic wife. What are you going to do next? "I'm going to Disney World!"
After month of emotinally turbulent scenes involving Brooke Logan's precarious love life, her portrayer decided to take a trip to the Magic Kingdom would be a healthy elixir to offset all of her on-screen woes. "My family has never been there before," says the actress, who planned the vacation to coincide with B&B's annual two-week hiatus in July.
While her first priority was making sure that her brood had had a blast in Orlando, Lang also managed to schedule a more romantic, child-free leg of the trip to get some alone time with hubby Alex D'Andrea. "We spent the first week at Disney World with the kids, and then my husband and I spent the second week together in Mexico after we dropped the kids at home."
Anything Can Happen!
Having returned from her much-needed R&R, Lang is eager to see what new challenges Brooke will face in her epic quest for happiness. "Falling in love is probably her biggest weakness," she says. "When she gets that feeling, she loses sense of reality. But I really still believe she's an honest, good, hard-working person who's loyal to her family and friends."
Lang concedes that Brooke's future is as much of a mystery to her as it is to viewers, and says that in the past 13 years, she's learned not to hazard any guesses about what will happen next. "I never try to look into the future and figure out storyline," she insists. "I just kind of go with it."
While Lang is happy to sit back and enjoy the surprises as they come, she admits the show's turn of events - namely the untimely demise of her alter ego's most recent rival, Macy - really caught her off guard. "It was completely out of the blue," she says. "I think it really shocked everyone because no one ever thought it would go in that direction. I allready miss Bobbie [Eakes, who played Macy]. She's a great actress.
"I'm glad I was finally able to work with her," she adds, "because I really had never had many scenes with her until recently."
Thorne & me Against The World
Just because Macy is off the canvas doesn't mean that Brooke and Thorne are in the clear. There will be no riding off into the sunset for this pair - at least not yet. "Brooke is certainly didn't want Macy to die, and now she's going to have to deal with all of the problems that have arisen from it," says Lang.
For starters, there's the guilt that both Brooke and Thorne no doubt will feel over Macy's passing. "It's such a heavy to have happen," Lang acknowledges. "Something like that could certainly pull a couple apart, just because there's so much trauma there.
"It's such a disaster," she continues. "Who knows how it's going to affect Thorne? And of course, the rest of the Forresters are going to disapprove, as usual."
When Push Comes To Shove
Brooke may not have to fight with Macy over Thorne anymore, but she has a whole slew of other adversaries who have stepped in to make her life hell. Heading up anti-Brooke campaign is Stephanie Forrester. Having regained her health, this aggrieved grande dame is eager to eradicate Brooke from her son's life. "This animosity goes way back," says Lang. "Brooke and Stephanie always have great scenes when we're at each other's throats."
A posse of Angry Spectras are also on the warpath, and leading the charge is Kimberly, who blames Brooke for her half sister's death. Once demure and sweet, Kimberly now wants to kick Brooke's butt. In Lang's opinion, Brooke views Kimberly as more of a nuisance than a real threat. "Brooke doesn't really see her as a problem," she says. "She can see that Kimberly is just a young person who is troubled and has no one to lean on."
Taking Off The Kid Gloves
While hell-bent teenager tries to terrorize her, Brooke also has to deal with another headstrong adolescent in her own household. "We're going to see a lot more family stuff coming up since Bridget is back on the show," says Lang. "I thing there will be some interesting dynamics between Brooke and her teenage daughter."
Bridget has been quite vocal in expressing outrage that her half brother, Thorne, soon may take on the role of stepdad. "I think it's important to Brooke to hear her children out," says Lang. "But you can't let your kids rule your life. There's a point where you have to say, 'Hey, this is happening, and we all have to try to work together through this.'"
The End Of An Era
While Lang is excited about a chance for more interaction with her on-screen daughter, she also regrets she no longer shares scenes with Ronn Moss (Ridge). For nearly a decade, Lang and Moss worked side-by-side, but now that their characters aren't romantically linked, the actress admits they've become more like passing ships in the night. "I really miss working with Ronn," she says. "It almost seems like we're strangers. You just don't really talk much unless you're rehearsing scenes."
After Brooke swooned over Ridge for a decade, it's hard to believe that she finally is over him. Even Lang admits that that those days are starting to seem like a distant memory. "When Ronn and I run into each other at the set now," she laughs, "we both say, 'Oh, hi... who are you?'"
