"Lieutenant Kije"

Statue of Russian Soldier

"Lieutenant Kije Suite" was actually composed by Prokofiev for the film "Lieutenant Kije"(1933).  The film tells the life story of a Russian soldier named Kije from his birth to his triumphs to his death. The music is obviously programmatic, which means that it was written for a specific reason.  The opposite of programmatic music is absolute music, which is music written solely for the purpose of writing music.  Prokofiev was one of the first world renowned composers to compose a film score.
