Coronation Street: Eddie Yates (Geoffrey Hughes)

Geoffrey Hughes.

The name may leave many scratching their heads and wondering who? But for millions of Corrie fans, he was the best thing about that show in the early Eighties.

Hughes was born in Liverpool and first trod the boards as an 18-year-old amateur.

Thanks to the Merseyside Unity Theatre Company, he cut his teeth on Progress to the Park and then worked his way on to films such as The Virgin Soldiers and Adolf Hitler - My Part in His Downfall.

For some, he will always be remembered for playing the voice of Paul McCartney in animated classic,Yellow Submarine, but in 1974, TV fame called down a certain cobbled street near Manchester.

He made his debut in Corrie as a thug who left Albert Tatlock more than a little shaken. Then Geoffrey became a legend as Eddie Yeats, the binman with the trademark torn hat.

In the years since Weatherfield's most lovable rogue left the street, Hughes has gone on to a string of other projects. He shone in Keeping Up Appearances and won a new wave of fans as Twiggy in The Royle Family. There was also a role in Heartbeat that did little harm to his career or bank balance.
