Prevue's Interview With
Michael Shanks

What is your favorite aspect of working on "Stargate SG-1" and your least favorite?

The people are my favorite and (laughing) interviews are my least favorite.

Had you seen the "Stargate" movie before taking the role?

Yes I had. (pause) Do you want me to elaborate on that?

You can elaborate more here...how does your interpretation of Daniel differ from that of James Spader?

I think the youth factor and the naivet* is the most significant differences between the two interpretations. I think I'm coming at the character from a much more boyish perspective, like a wide-eyed child seeing things. I think there was a certain amount of, and I think this was just inherent to his personality, James played a person with a bit more baggage. My Daniel is a little bit more open, umm, accepting and excited about his experiences, in sort of an ingenuous kind of way, I think. There is more boyish excitement to his discoveries and he tends to not be...I wouldn't say that James was standoffish, but he was somewhat adversarial to the Kurt Russell character in the film and I'm much more compromising, I feel. There is less adversity created and my Daniel is someone who is more willing to try and figure everybody out, no matter what their differences. I feel those are the strong differences in our
interpretations.

Will there be a continuation of the storyline between your character and his wife this season?

I don't know. I think that to keep that storyline alive there probably has to some sort of tie-in to keep the audience teased with it. I have no idea, honest to God, what they intend to write with it. I know it keeps being hinted at, but I don't know if a direct storyline will be dealt with. It's out of my hands.

With out giving too much away, what does the future hold for SG-1?

I have absolutely no idea. (laughs)

What's it like to work with Richard Dean Anderson, since he's the one who inspired you to get into acting?

It's a hoot. He's like an eight-year-old child and a grumpy old man rolled into one body. He has more boyish excitement than anyone I've ever met. He's a lot of fun to work with. He can be a downright Oscar the Grouch sometimes, but I think all of us, Chris, Amanda and myself all get along famously with him and each other. Richard certainly isn't difficult to work with at all. I think he's a lot of fun and he brings a lot to the production. He still likes to sharpen his teeth every now and then on the work. We all get along well.
