ANDROMEDA           ANDROMEDA

Andromeda is a large constellation of the Northern Hemishere but can be seen at certain parts of the year in the South. In Greek mytholoyy Andromed was chained to a rock as a sacrifice to the sea monster Cetus. It was set as punishment by the gods for the offense committed by her mother, queen Cassiopeia, who boasted that Andromeda was more beautiful than the Sea Nymphs, Neptunes daughter. Andromed is home to the beautiful Andromeda galaxy, best viewed on a clear dark night.

INTERESTING ASTRO OBJECTS

The great andromeda and neighbouring galaxiesM31: The Great Andromeda galaxy, formerly known as the Great Andromeda Nebula, is the most distance object seen with the naked eye. It is the nearest big spiral galaxy and a member of a local Group of galaxies. The Andromeda Galaxy is similar to our own Milky Way, lying 2.2 million light years away. It is best observed on clear, darks night where it can be seen by the naked eye as a hazy cloud. Binoculars will show the elliptical shape and a 4 inch telescope will show the brighter core.

M110: A neighbouring Andromeda galaxy, M110 glows at 8th magnitude. It can be seen in a 4 inch scope as a fuzzy patch of light, brightening towards the core.

NGC 752: A large scattered cluster of up to 100 stars of 9th and 10th magnitude.

M32: Another satellite spiral galaxy of Andromeda. It is best seen through larger telescopes, however a 4 inch scope will show a fuzzy patch of light.

ALAMAK: A colour contrast close double star, great for observing through smallers telescopes. The primary star is golden in colour with its companion a greenish colour.
