General Info:
The Deep Gap/Blk Mtn Trail is 9 miles to Deep Gap round trip from Mt. Mitchell picnic grounds. First 1/2 mile is very easy. After that the trail is very rocky with some steep climbs especially Big Tom heading back to Mt. Mitchell. Making this trail moderate to strenuous.
The trail travels through a lot of Frazier Fir and some Red Spruce forest. Mt. Craig and to a lesser extent Big Tom have rocky open areas.
Trail meets junction of Big Tom Gap trail at Big Tom Gap, then climbs over Cattail Peak (also called Balsam Cone) before descending into Deep Gap.
You can turn back for round trip or the Trail continues pass Deep Gap (where a number of campsites are located and the only place where camping is allowed) the trail continues over Gibbs Mtn and Celo Knob then drops down off the Black Range.
