Joseph (Tony) Accardo [born:Antonio Leonardo Accardo] (b.1906)

gangster. From about 1928 to 1931 he was a personal bodyguard to Al Capone
in Chicago. Accardo worked his was through the ranks of the Mafia to become
boss of the Chicago Sydicate in 1943. He lost control to Sam Giancana in
1957 but regained it in 1966. Nicknamed "Big Tuna" because of his fondness
for big-game fishing, Accardo has acquired considerable wealth from properties
and businesses in Florida, California, Nevada, and South America.
