What's nuking...
There are nuke programs, which take advantage of some fault within windows.. The Nuker uses a program, that sends Information to the "being nuked person's" computer and due to the errors in windows the computer will crash or do other strange things... (note: you can be nuked if you are connected to the internet, you don't even have to be on irc...)

Nuke Attack 1
Nuke 1: also known as "Bluescreen nuke" or "Winnuke" or "OOB-nuke" or "Port 139 attack/nuke".
The program called winnuke will send a special kind of package to port139 (or another vulnerable port) of the being nuked person. Only people with Microsoft Windows can be nuked with this nuke.

You know when you are nuked by nuke 1 if you get (in 70% of all cases) a blue screen in windows, with a windows fault... your internet connection has been destroyed,.. most likely you will have to reboot your computer...

If you don't have win95 but Windows NT or win3.x instead, you can download patches here : Nuke1 Patch Here.

Nuke Attack 2
Nuke 2: Also known as "ICMP-nuke".
This nuke will terminate a connection between 2 parties (on IRC: you (=party 1) and the IRC-server (=party 2)). By nuking both the ports with which they are connected to eachother, the connection between those 2 parties is cut off immediately... This nuke can nuke every user on the internet

You know when you are nuked by nuke 2 if your suddenly disconnected from the server on which you were, and you didn't disconnect yourself, your quit-msg said nothing... you will have to reconnect to the server...

There isn't a patch against this kind of nuking. However there is a way to protect you. So with this nuke you can nuke 2 parties so both parties have to be protected. Ever heard of a firewall? A firewall means that some people aren't allowed to connect to you. And if you know that a certain person is attacking you, shield yourself by using a firewall. You can download a windows firewall here: http://www.signal9.com

Tips to make you hard to nuke_2:

  1. Use a other IRC-serverport then the default 6667, ofcourse you will have to find a IRC-server, which uses also other ports.
  2. Go on IRC using your shell-account (if you have one ask your internet provider how to do that).
  3. Start clones on different servers, the nuke can only disconnect one clone each time, the nuker has to nuke all your clones and not just one to get you off IRC.
  4. Eliminate your enemies, before they eliminate you (best defense is offence)
  5. If you are a channel-operator (an OP), and you want to protect your channel users ban the nuker (use a nuke-watcher to see who it is) and put your channel on +s (secret)
so the nuker can't see who are in the channel.
  6. Search for somebody, the nuker is scared of, like a WARE-fare group or an IRC-op or the nuker-system administrator (from his internet provider) and threathen to contact
those persons if he doesn't stop bothering you.
  7. Use a Unix-Bouncer, A bouncer is program which runs on a other computer, you will connect to that bouncer and the bouncer connects to a irc-server.. You will get the host-adress (=IP) from the machine the boucer is running on at IRC. This is a big advantage because if they are attacking you, they are really attacking the bouncer which runs on a unix-machine,which is connected high-speed to the internet (ofcourse this is only if you installed it on a computer ,which is connected high speed with the internet (provider-computer?), If you are a beginner in unix-operating systems,.. don't bother it is to hard to setup then... You can download the Bouncer (linux) or the Bouncer Sourcecode...
  8. The same as the bouncer for Unix, but this version is for windows-machines, so If you can find a windows-machine which has a fast connect to the internet, and that somebody has this bouncer installed so you can bounce your connection trough his windows-machine, you are also protected. This is not such a good solution as the Unix-bounce, cause windows is less protected against many things as Unix Os's.
