the Isle of Arran

These are just a few pictures of my 2001 visit to the Isle of Arran. We stopped by on our way to Knapdale and thus avoided the way up to Fort William and then down again via Inveraray. Instead we took the ferry to Arran and spent a night there. We had the chance to surround the coast by car and went to the Kings cave, which is the legendary place where Robert the Bruce fled, after murdering his rival John Comyn at Greyfriars Abbey. Owing to the foot and mouth disease in 2001 we were not able to visit the standing stones, but we visited the just recently reopened Arran distillery where we had a very nice private guided tour thanks to John, who could tell a few interesting stories about whisky and distilling on the island. I have seen other distilleries before and since but this one was very special in it's warm welcome. Then just the 5 year old Arran whisky was available but we took a bottle and liked it.
